EarthRise SoundSystem is the shared musical vision of producer David "Duke Mushroom" Schommer and DJ/writer/yogi Derek Beres. Utilizing Duke's multi-instrumental background and worldly percussion with Derek's concepts of "Global Beat Fusion," this duo started collaborating energies to create music for movement in late 2008. In 2010 they released their first full length album, The Yoga Sessions: EarthRise SoundSystem (Yoga Organix/White Swan), which has garnered praise by the NY Times, Yoga Journal, MTV, Boston Globe, Yoga International, LA Yoga and many others. As remixers, ERSS has re-worked such talent as Vieux Farka Toure, Femi Kuti, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Natacha Atlas, Nickodemus, Deva Premal, MC Yogi and others. A collection of the remix work, Remixes Are Songs, Too, is slated to be released in 2011. ERSS also recently completed work on the documentary film, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, with Duke scoring the film and Derek contributing as Musical Supervisor. At an Equinox on the Upper East Side, Derek Beres brings his own brand of music to class. A yogi, D.J. and music writer, he has teamed with the producer Dave Schommer, known as “Duke Mushroom,” to create EarthRise SoundSystem. (Their full-length album is titled “The Yoga Sessions.”) The idea was to reinvent yoga music, which they do by drawing overwhelmingly on global rhythms that are heavy on percussion.
